Mother’s Day in the U.S. and Mexico. When is it?

May is a great month, the weather is warm, the scenery is green, flowers are in bloom, and the lengthening days allow for more activities. Yet, there is another reason in the month of May that is cause for celebration: Mother’s Day!

This year, Mother’s Day, which is always the second Sunday of May, falls on the 13th. However, if you are one of the millions of Californians of Mexican ancestry, you may be aware that in Mexico, Mother’s Day always fall on May 10th, regardless of what day of the week it is. Since customs are often carried by people to their new countries of residence, this means, there are some people who may actually celebrate Mother’s day twice in one month or at least have an option as to when to spend time with their mom or do something special for her.

How long have we been officially celebrating Mother’s Day? In 1910, West Virginia was the first state to declare a Mother’s Day holiday, and the U.S. as a whole went official in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation officializing the second Sunday of May as “a public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.”

What about Mexico? Mexico celebrated its first Mother’s day on May 10th of 1922. Mexicans usually gather with their families, go out to eat, give flowers to their moms, and of course gold and silver are a great way to express gratitude for your “jefa”(boss) as some like to call their mother.

You may ask though, when was the last time both Mother’s Days fell on the same date, avoiding confusion and creating a sort of super Mother’s Day? I guess it happens often enough because the last time was May 10th, 2015.

What special little or big thing can I do this year, to honor mom you may be thinking? Perhaps a gift as simple as flowers, chocolate, take her to a restaurant, a greeting card, a gift card, maybe even an appliance, or take her to a movie, go on a family hike, a family picnic, cook for mom, help mom with the chores, wash her car, or maybe just talk to her, listen to her. Of course, if you really want to go all out, get an instant credit approval here in 5 minutes, then head down to your nearest Prestigio Jewelers!

So regardless of what day you or your family choose to honor the people who make it all possible, Happy Mother’s Day!
